- If result is positive (reactive): Contact our health team or visit your local health department for a confirmatory test and care. (provide health department contact link as well as to contact us at 912.285.6022)
If result is negative (non-reactive): Great — use this as a baseline and consider regular testing, especially if you have new or multiple partners.
Why It’s Important
- Many people with HIV don’t know their status. Getting tested is the first step to treatment and prevention. Self Testing | HIV Testing | Let’s Stop HIV Together | CDC
- At-home testing offers privacy and convenience: you can test in your own space without scheduling a clinic appointment.
- Early diagnosis means better health outcomes and reduces the chance of spreading HIV to others.
Things to Know Before You Test
Window Period: An HIV self-test detects antibodies and may not pick up a very recent exposure. If you believe you were exposed recently, you may need a follow-up test.
Type of Test: The self-test uses an oral swab (or other approved method) and gives results within about 20 minutes.
If Positive: A reactive result is not final — you must get a confirmatory test at a clinic.
If Negative: Good news — but stay safe. Use condoms, consider prevention options (e.g., PrEP if eligible).
This Service Doesn’t Replace: Comprehensive STI screening, direct clinical care, or immediate emergency care (e.g., if you think you’ve had very recent HIV exposure).
