Universal Newborn Hearing Screen and Intervention works to ensure
all Georgia newborns are screened for hearing loss at birth.
All babies born in the Southeast Health District are screened for
hearing loss prior to discharge from the hospital.
This program includes screening for hearing loss in the birthing
hospitals; referral to the local health department for secondary
screening for those who don’t pass and for further audiological
evaluation if needed, as well as, linkage to appropriate
intervention for those babies diagnosed with hearing loss.
The High-Risk Infant Follow-up program is also available in the
lower 10 counties of the district. This program is offered to
families with infants discharged from a regional perinatal health
facility NICU. The infant receives in-home visits and can be
followed up to one year of age.
